Hi, I’m Camila Ariza a Colombian-Canadian filmmaker based in Montreal.
I am currently raising funds to make my short film All Together a ten-minute short that explores identity, assimilation, and the immigrant experience told through the eyes of an innocent child.
This is a deeply personal project for me because growing up, although Western media offered me comfort, it also left me searching for myself in stories where I didn’t belong. Rooted in my own upbringing as a Colombian immigrant in Montreal, I hope to create visibility for minorities like me and those who felt pressured to suppress aspects of their identities out of fear of not being accepted.

About The Film

All Together is a short film about an eleven-year-old Colombian immigrant, Cata Cardona, who learns to navigate her new Canadian life through the perpetual consumption of a stereotypical Western sitcom. As Cata immerses herself in a fabricated world, she begins to mimic what she sees on screen, from general societal norms to narrow Western beauty standards, blurring the line between adaptation and assimilation. Ultimately, All Together is a meditation on a childhood caught between cultures, where the subtle marks of displacement and the persistent presence of media shape the formation of identity.

Why This Story Matter

The project’s community impact lies in its visibility, resonance and representation; many children of immigrants carry quiet stories of adaptation that are rarely represented on screen. Drawing from reality, I have casted a Colombian family, with a similar background to mine to play the protagonists. I have assembled a cast and crew prioritizing marginalized voices, and it has fostered a space in which we can celebrate our differences and bond over shared experiences. All Together offers a space for those experiences to be seen and discussed. Following its completion, the film will be screened at Concordia’s Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema showcase and submitted to local festivals; festival du nouveau cinéma and TIFF.
