Many may not know that before Rhett’s heart diagnosis, Amberly was already considered high risk with having an incompetent cervix. Her doctor put her on complete bedrest starting at 14 weeks and she had a cerclage procedure at 16 weeks, putting her out of work since October 2022. Then at Rhett’s 20 week anatomy scan they were hit with the news that Rhett had a very complicated heart defect- pulmonary atresia with IVS and tricuspid atresia, needing a total of 3 open heart surgeries within his first 5 years of life. Amberly and Mikey made the decision to deliver in Atlanta, Ga to be close to Children’s Health Care of Atlanta where Rhett would receive his first open heart surgery shortly after birth. Atlanta is about 2 and a half hours from their home. Amberly also has a 5 year old autistic son and Mikey has a 10 year old daughter. Neither siblings are allowed to visit Rhett due to the rules of the hospital so they are struggling with splitting their time and being there for their critical newborn. Rhett made his arrival 2/21/2023 at northside hospital in Atlanta, Ga and was transported to CHOA at Egleston one day after birth. 8 days after birth he received his first open heart surgery. While the surgery went well the cardiology team wants to keep Rhett in Atlanta for 3-6 months until he receives his second open heart surgery. This puts Amberly and Mikey out of work for an additional 3-6 months on top of caring for a critical child once he’s finally released from the hospital. This is heart breaking for any family and the last thing they need is the stress of worrying about how they will pay their mortgage and bills that don’t stop no matter how long they are away. Not to mention the constant worry of their other two children who they are away from during the week and get to see the only on the weekends. In addition to all the bills piling up, they are also having to pay for gas, groceries/food and daily parking fees at the hospital. While Amberly and Mikey would never ask for help, the goal of this go fund me is to relieve some financial burden, to help with the daily costs of lodging and daily costs of food, gas and parking. The loss of wages has been a big blow for this family along with all the added costs of staying away from home and they still have a long road ahead of them—including two more open heart surgeries—before Rhett has a true chance at life. Please send your thoughts and prayers for Rhett’s recovery and help lessen the stress of this time for Amberly and Mikey by making a donation, big or small.
