What I love most about North Carolina is the sense of community and family. When you walk into a small business, you know the owner, their daughter, and their mother. You can stop at a red light, look to your left, and recognize your neighbor running late to work.

That feeling is at the heart of Birdland.

Birdland is a independent coming-of-age drama based on Frank Morelli's multi-award-winning novel "On The Way to Birdland." It follows 17-year-old Cordy, who leaves his small North Carolina hometown for the first time, traveling across the East Coast to find his estranged brother and reunite his family before his father dies - chasing him all the way to New York City's legendary Birdland Jazz Club, the same stage that inspired John Coltrane.

I resonate deeply with Cordy because I had that same dream - to leave High Point. When I got to New York City, I developed a deeper appreciation for the community I grew up in and a nostalgic feeling for North Carolina that I never expected. Often, people can't understand how much something means to them until they leave it.

Both the author, Frank Morelli, and I call High Point home. This is our story - and we believe it deserves to be on the big screen.
