Bringing Him Home: A Family’s Fight for Recovery and Justice

I am reaching out to our community because my family is currently navigating a series of life-altering crises. Over the last few months, I have stepped into the role of full-time advocate and caregiver for both my brother and my mother, and I am reaching a point where I cannot carry this weight alone.

The Crisis: My Brother’s Hit-and-Run & Brain Surgery On the evening of November 3rd, my brother’s life changed forever when he was the victim of a hit-and-run while walking across the street. He has been hospitalized ever since, fighting a severe brain injury. At the beginning of January, he was diagnosed with hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain), and on January 15th, he underwent surgery to have a shunt placed in his brain.

He is currently in recovery and we are preparing for the next step: transitioning him into a rehabilitation facility. Because of the nature of his injury, he can no longer live independently and will require 24/7 care.

The Legal & Administrative Battle Beyond the medical recovery, we are in an ongoing legal trial to seek justice for the hit-and-run. Being his advocate is a full-time job. I am fighting through the bureaucracy of Social Security for his disability benefits and navigating the DMV to recover his lost California ID. These administrative battles—the phone calls, notary visits, and legal filings—are taking a heavy toll. To be honest, I am completely overwhelmed.

Displacement and Financial Strain I am not local to San Diego; I live two hours away. To be by my family's side daily, I have been displaced from my home and staying with a kind friend here in the city. Since December, my mother has also been in acute rehab following major surgery. Because I am her official caregiver, my income stopped the moment she was admitted. To add to this, my contracting agency is closing, and my second job ends on January 31st.

Our Mission: Healing Together Our goal is to relocate my brother so he can move in with my mother and me once he is discharged from rehab. We need to be together to heal. This move is essential, but the costs of relocation, car maintenance for the constant 4-hour round trips, and staying on the road with no steady income are mounting.

How Your Support Helps Your donations will go directly toward:

Travel & Car Maintenance: Gas, tolls, and essential repairs (tires/oil) to keep my car reliable for the 240-mile round trips home.

Housing & Gratitude: Allowing me to contribute to the friend who has opened their home to me so I can stay in San Diego to manage this crisis.

Legal & Admin Fees: Costs for the hit-and-run trial, notary services, and the fees associated with filing for disability and recovering vital documents.

Relocation Expenses: Moving truck rentals and supplies to bring my brother home to us.

Daily Essentials: Modest help with meals so I can remain a full-time advocate for my family.

My goal is to get my mom through rehab, to get my brother justice, and to get us all settled under one roof. Your support is the lifeline that makes this possible. Thank you for your incredible kindness.
