Support My Emergency Foster’s Vet Costs

UPDATE:
HI! I’ve been meaning to get an update on this sweet girl for everyone: your generosity and kindness was able to help us cover not just food, supplies, housing for fostering and her vet bills in their entirety—but she found her FOREVER HOME out on Long Island with a house AND A YARDher new name is Reina and it’s so fitting for such a sweet queen! THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts!

My name is Wandy and I am writing on behalf my new foster dog who I’ve called “big momma” for the time being. I learned about her from our neighborhood Facebook group in Brooklyn. She was found eating garbage in the middle of the street, underweight, lactating and having just given birth to a litter of puppies, which were nowhere to be found. A neighbor who can’t take care of her long-term brought her to the vet and determined she is not chipped and no owner has claimed her. I don’t know her medical history, or her vaccination history.

Right now she has some wounds on her face and an ear infection in one ear, in addition to whatever health complications she may be facing.

She is currently passing stool with blood because she gave birth to her newest litter as recently as a month ago and is still healing/recovering from that. A 6/8 vet visit will determine the severity of her circumstances, but I don’t know how costly it will be.

The neighbor who found her is willing to contribute some funds to her bills. However, in terms of pet insurance, what she has experienced would be considered pre-existing conditions which would have to be paid out of pocket.

The estimated costs are as follows

  • Routine checkups: $50 to $250
  • Spay/neuter: $160 to $220
  • Vaccines per shot: $15 to $28
  • Physical exams: $45 to $55
  • Fecal exam: $25 to $45
  • Heartworm test: $45 to $50
  • Dental cleaning: $70 to $400
  • Bloodwork: $80 to $200
  • Ultrasounds: $300 to $600

in addition to miscellaneous but necessary items and additions like food, bowls, training, medication for infections as needed and day to day supplies.

I have already reached out to rescues, neighborhood animal support groups, dog trainers, pet care businesses and friends in attempts to collect some of these materials and subsidize some of the vet costs as well. One of the organizations I’m in contact with says they might be able to use the funds of this gofundme page to coordinate some of her healthcare. But as she is a big girl who just gave birth, I need all the help I can get!

I am hesitant to take her to a shelter or rescue permanently, because considering the complexity of her situation—the financial cost, and the stigma that comes with her being a black pitbull dog (many pitbulls are stereotyped as being inherently violent or dangerous)—I would hate to see her back out on the street, abused, or even euthanized due to lack of rescue agency lodging or interest in fostering/adopting her.

As you can see here, she is very sweet and very demure. I would love to give her a pain free, comfortable life as a hopeful foster fail! Anything you can donate would be appreciated.
