Support Our Brother Chuck Sullivan in His Battle with IBM

Donation protected
Hi, we’re Debbie, Chris and Justine—Chuck Sullivan’s siblings—and we’re reaching out on behalf of our beloved brother, a man who’s always been full of heart, strength, and generosity.
If you grew up in Winthrop, chances are you know Chuck—or “Chuckie,” as many still call him. He’s a hometown legend, not just for his accomplishments on the field but for the kind and humble man he’s always been. Chuck married his high school sweetheart, Pam Hubley, and together they raised two wonderful children, Priscilla, and Gavin in Swampscott, MA.
In the 1980s, Chuck made his mark on Winthrop High School sports as one of the all-time greats in football, hockey, and baseball. He helped lead Winthrop to a state baseball title and a Super Bowl title in 1981 and went on to play Division 1 hockey at Boston University. But beyond his athletic achievements, Chuck has always been known for his big heart, his quiet strength, and the way he shows up for others.
Today, Chuck is facing the toughest battle of his life. Seven years ago he was diagnosed with Inclusion Body Myositis (IBM)—a rare and progressive muscle disorder that causes muscle weakness and atrophy, particularly in the legs, arms, and hands. It also impairs his swallowing eventually requiring a feeding tube. The impact on his daily life has been profound.
Chuck can no longer climb stairs or rise from a chair without help. His grip strength is extremely limited, making simple tasks like opening a jar or brushing his teeth difficult. He now relies on a wheelchair, ramps, elevated furniture, and countless other accommodations just to get through each day.
Unfortunately, his condition has advanced to the point where he can no longer work. He is currently appealing a denial of his disability benefits, which has added another layer of difficulty to an already challenging time.
While Chuck and Pam have adapted with strength and grace, the financial burden is growing quickly—and it’s overwhelming. That’s why we’re turning to the community of people we believe love Chuck like we do and might want to help support him as we try to make his quality of life better and day to day life easier to manage.
Here’s how your donation can help:
A wheelchair-accessible van: Right now, getting in and out of their car is a major struggle. A wheelchair-accessible van would allow Chuck and Pam to leave the house together for basic things—going to the store, seeing family, or simply enjoying a meal out. These are things most of us take for granted, but they’ve become increasingly difficult for Chuck.
A wheelchair-accessible bathroom: Their current bathroom setup is no longer safe or manageable. Converting their tub into a roll-in shower would restore some dignity and safety to Chuck’s daily routine.
As Chuck’s condition progresses, these needs—and others—will only grow. But with your help, we can give our brother the comfort, mobility, and independence he deserves.
Every donation, no matter the size, makes a difference. And if you can’t give right now, please consider sharing this page with others who might be able to help.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for supporting Chuck and our family during this difficult time. Your kindness and generosity mean the world to us.
With love and gratitude,

Debbie, Chris and Justine
