My dogs say it's time for an upgrade.
In the second half of 2018, I discovered the sport of canicross and started my running journey. And in January of 2019, we discovered Georgia Urban Mushing. Many of us were just getting started in the sports of dryland mushing. Canicross and bikejor being the most popular of our small crew.
At the time, I swore I was NEVER getting on a bike. A childhood accident had put me off bikes, and the idea of attaching a dog was just terrifying. But I was new to running, and inexperience put me on the path to overuse injuries by summer. My knees weren't having it. I needed a break to recover. My dog Gabe, however, wasn't having it. He was LOVING the sport and he wanted to RUN.
So I pulled out my mom's old mountain bike from the garage, rigged up an antenna with some PVC and string, and gave it a go. Our first attempt was a DISASTER. We drove all the way to the trail just to discover the tires had disintegrated from dryrot from being in storage so long. We packed up, headed another hour to a bike shop for the repairs, only for the nice cool morning weather to start escaping us. I looked for the nearest bike trail, only to find out it was entirely paved when we got there. We gave it a go anyway and we were hooked!
Not long after I got us a proper mountain bike and antenna. We kept training. We started racing. I added dogs.
And now my dog's skills have outpaced my bike. At our most recent races my feet have been bouncing around trying to maintain contact with the pedals, and even when I manage that, the pedals have just been spinning no matter how hard I tried to help. I have to slow my dogs down far too much on turns so that I don't fall.
It's time for an upgrade. Clipless pedals to keep my feet where they belong and make my pedaling more efficient. And a dropper post to get that seat out of my way on turns, but still be able to raise it back up so I can keep pedaling. They deserve it!
Attached below I have an estimated cost for the upgrades, plus a safer bike rack to fit my car better. Added a little buffer for price changes and tax.
