Making The World Adaptable
Hello everyone! I am the mother of twin boys, Calvin and Carter. Carter was born with a physical disability that requires him to use a power wheelchair for mobility. I thought the same thing as you are initially... that has to be devastating. But we have learned that it isn't devastating at all! To be a wheelchair user does not equal a lesser quality of life, quite the opposite in fact! What we have also found is that the world is a lot more adaptable than we realized and this has fueled our fire to continue to make the world more inclusive for our son and others who use mobility devices.
We live in a small town in Connecticut, and the lovely school that Carter and Calvin will attend for kindergarten does not have an inclusive playground. This means he is limited to how he can socialize with his peers. Of course, this is unacceptable to us, and our community and PTA has supported our mission to upgrade our playground to make it accessible for all! Adaptive playground equipment and flooring is very expensive and we will be writing for grants and searching for funding support as we go. We are still in the infancy stages of picking out equipment for the playground and will soon have a 3D model to share with our exact plan! In the meantime, we would like to raise money for an adaptive whirl, as it was Carter's favorite element at an adaptive playground we visited. He loved the thrill of spinning and asked to do it repeatedly!
We will keep you posted on the progress of the playground as we go along! As always we appreciate your love and support!
Love,
