Support Our 111 Year-Old St Paul Jewish Cemetery

Donation protected
The Chesed Shel Emes Cemetery of Saint Paul has faithfully served our Jewish Community since its inception in 1912. Born out of a vision, inspired by chesed and tzedakah, a determined group of Jewish immigrants set about to provide a dignified place of rest for those who lacked the financial means to obtain congregational synagogue membership, or who could not otherwise afford a proper traditional burial.

Over the intervening decades the Chesed Shel Emes Society has lovingly carried forward the original mission of its founders: traditional Jewish burial based on the teachings of Torah.

Our Dilemma

This cemetery is not now, nor has it ever been, affiliated with any synagogue or temple. Therefore, we do not receive funding from local synagogues or temples. As a non-profit organization, our funding source is strictly derived from burial plot sales, member dues, individual donations, and a handful of philanthropic funds.

Demographics have changed significantly. The Jewish Community as a whole has become less observant and more secular. Too many family descendants have either moved away from the area, or are no longer inspired to financially support the cemetery where their relatives rest in peace.

But the need to continue maintaining the cemetery remains. This includes the cemetery grounds, monuments, infrastructure, and course-of-business obligations such as insurance, utilities, and maintenance. It remains the sacred task and duty of the Chesed Shel Emes Burial Society to oversee these on-going obligations. We at the Society are a small group of dedicated volunteers with our own family and friends interred at the cemetery.

Our Ask for Support

The Chesed Shel Emes Society is the non-profit 501(c)3 organization which oversees the day-to-day cemetery operations. We are reaching out to the greater Jewish Community for financial support to help fund several critical projects. These projects relate to cemetery security, safety, modernization, monument preservation, and general upkeep of the grounds.

We are calling on our Jewish Community to help.
Every gift, any size, will make a huge impact whether from an individual donor, a business, or a philanthropic foundation.

Specifically our project focus includes:

  • Dead and diseased tree removal throughout the grounds to prevent headstone damage.
  • Numerous monuments subjected to freeze-thaw cycles over the years in need of raising and resetting to restore them to their upright position.
  • Chapel building renovation and modernization.
  • Restoration of perimeter fencing.
  • Installation of a security system to deter vandalism and monitor trespassing.
  • Cemetery grounds roadway re-pavement.

We anticipate project costs to be $75,000.

The generosity you provide is greatly appreciated.
With your help we can continue to serve our Jewish Community and provide a thriving, traditional, dignified place of rest for many more years.
