Araceli is raising this fundraiser for Oswaldo and his family as they face an incredibly difficult chapter in their lives. This is urgent because we are talking about a 10-year-old boy who could be deported, and we need to raise funds as soon as possible to pay for legal representation for him and his mother. Unfortunately, we were unable to secure legal counsel for them through a non-profit organization.

This is the story:

Oswaldo, a Colombian immigrant, came to the United States with his wife and 8-year-old son after fleeing La Guajira, Colombia, because of death threats tied to a land dispute. They are now seeking asylum and trying to build safety after leaving everything behind. But the process has been far more difficult than Oswaldo ever imagined. While living in Los Angeles, Oswaldo has been forced to wear an ankle monitor and is barred from working by immigration authorities, leaving the family unable to support themselves in the way they want to.

For months, Oswaldo, his wife, and their son have relied almost entirely on public charity while struggling each month to keep up with precarious housing in downtown Los Angeles. The funds raised will help cover legal fees for their asylum case as well as basic living expenses while they navigate this uncertain time. In Oswaldo’s own words, “I am doing this only because we are desperate and financially overwhelmed, and because we urgently need to pay the legal fees for our asylum process.” More than anything, Oswaldo wants the chance to work and provide for his family without having to ask for help. Until then, any support, no matter the size, will mean so much to this family. Thank you for standing with Oswaldo and helping them move toward safety and stability.

Update: On August 27, when Osvaldo went to an immigration appointment in Los Angeles, he was detained after being informed that his case had been closed. Weeks later, on September 10, he was deported to Colombia, despite threats against him in his hometown on the Colombian coast. His wife, Javielys, and his 10-year-old son remain in Los Angeles. The child also faces a deportation order, as his case was included in the same file as Osvaldo’s.

We know there are many causes in need of support, and we sincerely hope people will help all the immigrants at risk of expulsion from the country. However, given that this story involves a child who has already endured great emotional suffering—and who could face deportation—we earnestly appeal for your donations.
