My name is Aaron Jackson, and I am proud to serve as Co-Coach of the Opelousas High School Tennis Team, alongside Coach Rubin Simmons, who has dedicated more than 10 years to mentoring student-athletes in our community. This program is especially meaningful to me because I was once one of Coach Simmons’ players myself. Through tennis, I learned discipline, perseverance, and confidence — lessons that helped shape my path. Today, I am preparing to graduate from medical school, and returning to coach alongside him is a full-circle moment that reflects the lasting impact this program has on students' lives.
Unfortunately, many of our current players face significant barriers. A large number come from disadvantaged backgrounds, and our team currently lacks the basic necessities needed to properly train and compete, including rackets, tennis balls, tennis shoes, practice equipment, uniforms, team gear, and transportation support for matches and tournaments. Despite these challenges, our players continue to show up with determination, heart, and a willingness to learn. Coach Simmons has spent over a decade building this program — often using his own resources — to ensure students have opportunities they might not otherwise have.
Tennis at Opelousas High School is more than just a sport. It provides mentorship, structure, academic motivation, and leadership development. I am living proof of what this program can do. Now, we want to ensure the next generation of student-athletes has the same opportunity. We hope you’ll join us in supporting these student-athletes. Your generosity will help us continue a legacy of mentorship, opportunity, and growth for the Opelousas High School Tennis Team.
