Niet iedereen heeft het geluk om van zijn passie zijn werk te kunnen maken. Wanneer dat wel zo is, doe je er alles aan om die passie te delen. Mijn naam is Francesco en mijn passie is dans. In 2009 realiseerde ik mijn droom: een eigen dansstudio. Het COVID-19 virus dreigt mijn droom in een nachtmerrie te veranderen. Jouw hulp is daarom hard nodig! Lees hieronder mijn verhaal.
VAN DROOM NAAR WERKELIJKHEID
Als vier jarige wist ik al dat ik danser wilde worden. Wat ik toen niet kon weten is dat mijn echte talent lesgeven is. Mijn passie najagend opende ik in 2009 een dansschool: Focus. Een thuis voor iedereen in Enschede die niet stil kan zitten. Met een team van 14 medewerkers, verzorgt Focus lessen, workshops, cursussen, optredens en theatervoorstellingen voor een breed publiek. Door het Coronavirus moesten alle activiteiten stil worden gelegd, maar Focus startte een alternatief: onder de noemer Focus iDance bieden we op YouTube online live lessen voor onze leden. Door het live op YouTube te streamen kan de hele wereld mee doen, gewoon vanuit je eigen huis. Van Yoga tot Hip Hop. Er is een breed lesaanbod. Zelfs voor de allerkleinste dansers is er een dynamische les.
GEEN RESERVES
De maanden maart, april, mei en juni zijn voor een dansschool cruciaal. Dit is de periode dat er veel lessen worden gegeven op basisscholen en dat er cursussen plaatsvinden. Vrijgezellen volgen in deze maanden ludieke workshops en nieuwe leerlingen vinden hun weg naar de dansschool. In deze periode is het zaak reserves op te bouwen zodat je de zomer kunt overbruggen. In de zomer liggen de activiteiten stil, maar gaan de kosten zoals zaalhuur en verzekeringen gewoon door.
Helaas kan geen van de geplande (reguliere) activiteiten doorgang vinden vanwege het Coronavirus. Nu willen we nog niet denken aan de zomer, want iedereen is terug gegaan naar een stapvoets-tempo; per dag bekijken we het nieuws en de laatste ontwikkelingen. Indien nodig past iedereen zich aan nieuwe maatregelen aan. Gelukkig hebben we trouwe leden die nu online les volgen en ons supporten door het lesgeld te blijven betalen, maar dat is niet voldoende om de dansschool overeind te houden.
DE NACHTMERRIE
Als kleine ondernemer die van zijn passie zijn werk heeft gemaakt, is de culturele sector geen vetpot. Dat hoeft ook niet; zolang ik mijn boodschappen kan doen en mijn huur kan betalen, ben ik tevreden. Maar om mijn personeel maak ik me ernstige zorgen. Twee medewerkers zijn in vastedienst, de rest werkt als ZZPer. Er zijn overheidsmaatregelen getroffen, maar deze zijn niet voldoende om hen of kleine ondernemers te beschermen. Graag wil ik alle 14 medewerkers behouden en kunnen blijven betalen. Ze aan het werk houden zodat ze niet in financiële problemen komen. De vaste lasten kunnen blijven dragen, zodat we na deze onwerkelijke periode onze leerlingen weer in de armen kunnen sluiten en samen kunnen dansen. Want we missen ze onbeschrijflijk veel!
De omschakeling van dansstudio naar een online platvorm voor dans en beweging is groot. Ik ben een optimist en heb weinig (vrije) tijd om te piekeren. Maar de nachtmerrie, dat het (t)huis dat ik gebouwd heb en waar wekelijks meer dan 400 mensen genieten van al het leuks dat we samen doen instort als een kaartenhuis, dreigt realiteit te worden. En dat gaat me aan het hart.
DOE MEE!
Er zijn nu al ontzettend veel leuke lessen die je terug kunt kijken op ons YouTube kanaal. Daarnaast zijn er wekelijks 20 lessen die je live kunt volgen. Daarbij kun je jouw vragen stellen aan de docent en in contact komen met andere sporters en dansers. Voor je deelname hieraan vragen we je een donatie te doen.
Dankzij alle positieve reacties op het YouTube kanaal, de goede samenwerking tussen docenten en de creatieve spurt die iedereen ervaart kan Focus met jouw support de komende weken veel uitdagende nieuwe video's aanbieden: workouts, choreografieën, stretch classes en instructievideo's. We houden vast aan onze positieve mindset. Daarom zijn de docenten volop dansen aan het voorbereiden en video's aan het maken.

Not everyone is blessed with turning his or her passion into a full time job. But if or when one does so, you’ll do everything to share that passion. My name is Francesco and my passion is dance. In 2009 I realized my dream: my own dance studio. Now, the COVID-19 virus threatens to turn my dream into nightmare. I need your help. Please read my full story below.
A DREAM BECOMES REAL
As a four year old I knew that I wanted to become a dancer. What I couldn’t know back then is that my real talent is teaching. Whilst chasing my passion, I founded a dance studio, Focus in 2009, in my home town of Enschede for everyone who can’t sit still. Our dedicated team of 14 employees provide classes, workshops, courses and theater performances for a wide audience. Due to the Corona outbreak, all activities had to be stopped. But the studio started an alternative to find relief, for the studio and for everyone stuck at home. By the name of Focus iDance we offer online live classes for our members on YouTube. By streaming it live, the whole world can participate, right from your own home. From Yoga to Hip Hop, there is a wide range of classes you can partake in. Even for the youngest of dancers there is dynamic class.
Across The Netherlands, children and parents are joining us through the Focus YouTube channel. Teachers are working day and night to film new choreographies and create workout videos in addition to the live classes. We’re very grateful for the spontaneous messages we received from people across the globe, who’ve found us through social media. Theirs and your support are very much needed and appreciated by Focus!
NO RESERVES
The months of March, April, May and June are crucial for a dance school like ours. In this time frame many classes are taught in primary schools and courses take place in our studios. During these months, bachelorettes attend fun workshops and new students find their way to the studio. In this period it is important to build up reserves funds for summer break. As in July and August all activities are halted, but costs such as rent and insurance continue. Unfortunately, none of the regular planned activities can take place because of the Corona virus. We don't want to think about problems we might be facing during summer, because everyone has switch back to a step-by-step pace; each and every day we watch the news and follow the latest developments. If necessary, everyone adapts to new measures. Fortunately, we have loyal members who now take online classes and support us by continuing to pay tuition fees, but that is not enough to keep the dance school afloat.
THE NIGHTMARE
It has become a nightmare for a small entrepreneur who has turned his passion into his full time job. The Dutch cultural and creative sector isn’t big business so these times affect us. For me personally making money is not a goal; as long as i can pay for my groceries and make due on rent, I’m perfectly satisfied. I am very concerned for my staff, two employees are contracted, the others work as self-employed persons. Government measures have been taken to relieve both business and self-employed persons, but these aren’t going to completely protect them or my small businesses. I would like to keep all 14 employees and be able to continue paying them full salaries so they don't run into financial difficulties. I would love to be able to keep up with overhead costs, so that after this unreal period we can embrace our students again and dance together. Because we miss them indescribably!
We are making the switch from a dance studio to an online platform for dance and movement related classes. This will help. What frightens me is it still might not be enough to keep this home I built to share dance, where over 400 people enjoy our weekly fun activities together might collapse like a house of cards. I’m an optimist and hopeful with support from our friendly viewers that can be avoided.

In heel Nederland swingen kinderen en ouders thuis mee via het YouTube kanaal van Focus. Docenten werken dag en nacht om naast de online lessen onder meer nieuwe choreografieën te filmen en workout video's te maken. Dit wordt met veel enthousiasme ontvangen: we krijgen spontane berichten van mensen die ons in deze moeilijke tijden willen supporten. En die support heeft Focus hard nodig.
