This is Franny Shippy, and I am starting this gofundme on behalf of Omar Shippy and his family. A devastating Hurricane Category 5, the biggest that this world has ever recorded, made landfall in Jamaica on Tuesday, October 28. With winds topping at 185 mph, and with a record deluge and accumulation of rain, this beautiful, small but mighty island and its people suffered catastrophic consequences. While the initial predictions were that the storm would likely come up from the south east through Kingston and Port Antonio, Hurricane Melissa took a turn traveling along the southern coast making landfall at Black River. The parishes of St. Ann, St, Elizabeth, and Westmoreland got the full brunt of Hurricane Melissa. Omar and his family are from New Works, Westmoreland and, while all family members are safe and survived, the family home did not. Two walls are still standing; the rest of the home has collapsed unto itself. The loss is great, and yet their Jamaican culture accepts the devastation with faith, strength, and thanks to God to still have life. Right now the trauma is new, and the coming weeks and months are critical to connect and to mobilize. We are currently trying to get a generator to Omar’s family, plus any needed supplies by shipping barrels with things like food, flashlights, batteries, clothes, etc. The family home is in bad shape, and other family members’ homes took a hit too. Electricity is predicted to be out for months. Cell service is spotty. Just basic necessities are needed. And, then, the rebuilding. Dear family, friends far and wide, the need is great, and the ask is simple. Whatever you can contribute is a blessing to Omar and his family.
