Over the past weekend, my boyfriend and I went out to East Texas to visit with some of his family members. I had asked our friends to watch Oliver so we could go alone since I don’t expect everyone to welcome Oliver the way they do me. Even though sometimes I forget, he is still a dog. Saturday evening, our friend took Oliver on a walk somewhere between 5-5:30pm for 15 or so minutes. Towards the end of the walk, Oliver had given up, and he had to be carried home. I received a text around 6pm from our friends asking how often Oliver gets walked a week. I told her a few times a week.. I pride myself in trying to keep a pug relatively fit and give him enjoyment of going on a walk with mom. The amount of panting and exhaustion he was experiencing was concerning and he was struggling to even get around. He was having an ataxic type of gait.. think of a really drunk person who can’t stand up straight. She had FaceTimed me to show me this and immediately I knew something was wrong. They took him to an urgent vet that was concerned for his condition and recommended he be sent to an emergency vet that could provide him the necessary care that he was likely going to need. He got to the ER vet around 7:30pm and they began trying to cool him off and began running tests. Garrett and I headed home and got to the vet around 9:30pm. The vet had expressed to me that Oliver was experiencing signs of heat stroke and his organs were beginning to fail. They needed to start life saving care immediately. I signed off and they began.
Garrett and I visited on Monday morning and he was doing a little better, his vitals were stable and he was alert but his glucose numbers and coagulation number in his blood were still concerning. Oliver still hadn’t eaten anything and wasn’t urinating despite the amount of fluids they were giving him. The vet tech explained to us that Oliver suffered severe heat stroke that was basically cooking him from the inside. This caused his organs to begin to fail, sending him into DIC and anaphylactic shock. While he was doing better, he still wasn’t, and isn’t, out of the woods. I got a call this morning around 5am, that the addition plasma they had given him was helping yet he still wasn’t eating and hadn’t urinated yet, so there is still concern for damage to the GI tract and kidneys. They are still unsure of when he will be able to go home and what his long term effects to his organs will be.
This has been a nightmare. My heart aches for my sweet baby and I wish I could trade places with him. Anyone who knows me knows how much I love my dog, Oliver, so deeply. He has been by my side the past 6 years through a lot of ups and downs and I truly believe he has saved my life more times than one.
Obviously this has caused a lot of stress and pain, but also financial distress, so I am creating this go fund me solely for Oliver. Anything is greatly appreciated. Even if you can’t afford to help, if you could please say a small prayer for my baby, I’d appreciate it more than you will ever know.
