Community Initiative for Lost and Abandoned Animals

Animals are LOOSE, dogs are being DUMPED, and we need more TRAPS!!!!!!

Have you ever lost a pet? Lost a dog? You cannot find them anywhere?

If you said, “Yes,” then you have an idea how we rescuers feel all the time. Please help us get the equipment we need to help the many lost animals in our community that will end up on the run for one reason or another.

As many of you know, Dog Days Search and Rescue helps us as much as they can but they are spread thin and coming to Ojai is not cost-effective. Many times, due to the increase of lost and abandoned animals, they are using one trap for multiple cases. The Ojai Humane Society has stopped taking strays after hours, Santa Paula Animal Rescue (SPARC) can no longer take strays due to funding issues and Ventura County Animal Shelter (VCAS) is now well over 110% capacity.

Due to all of these concerns, the need for community involvement has increased significantly. Many rescues are FULL. Therefore, a new community base camp is being established to support lost and abandoned animals. This initiative, championed by me (Jennifer Kusch) along with my pet service business Tigger’s Angel Paws (TAP), aims to reduce reliance on others by involving the community to a greater degree. We are looking to raise $3000 to buy traps and supplies, to help the local lost animals. Won’t you please help us help them?

A 12x12 canvas shed will be used at my place to store supplies like scanners, collars, leashes, game cameras, Arlo cameras, and traps, along with a four-car garage that will be used for emergency dog care. One of the humane traps we desperately need is a Tru Catch (XL), which will allow us to trap any and all sizes. Unfortunately, due to its size, it can only be shipped by freight, which means the shipping is almost the same cost as the trap itself!! (The total cost is almost $1400. It is 6 feet long and weighs 60 pounds). Also, getting the next size down (Large) would be beneficial since it’s much easier to transport. (The total cost for this is about $500. It is 4 feet long and weighs 50 pounds).

Recent cases in Ojai that took longer than usual due to lack of resources include two German Shepherds, who were loose for almost a month before being rescued, a black lab that was loose for almost 3 weeks, and a skinny Doberman mix who was living out in the orchards for almost a month in Santa Paula. As a former teammate of Dog Days Search & Rescue, I worked closely with them on some of the active cases here. I would love to assist them and this community further, as boots on the ground for these lost animals, but we need additional equipment to do so.

If you can please find it in your heart to support this cause and help keep loose animals safe we would appreciate it. Any donation amount would be appreciated.
