Iʻm Teleise Scanlan, direct ʻohana to the Fujikawaʻs of Kaʻū.

If youʻre from Kaʻū, you know our ʻohana. You especially know those of Kaʻū NEVER ask for kōkua. Das shame. We holomua on our own cuz can. We have all we need within our ʻohana/community. They are currently organizing, clearing roads, delivering food and water, ensuring kūpuna from Waiʻōhinu-Nāʻālehu have their medication, on top of cleaning up individual lots + homes as much as can.

OF COURSE THEY NOT THINKING ABOUT KĀLĀ. So this is me (first generation of 14 to have been raised outside of Kaʻū) asking on their behalf, as they are paʻahana with the firsthand aftermath of Lala. AND cuz the pilina between Puna + Ka'ū remains unmatched.

The last piece of our ʻohana home in Waiʻōhinu was washed to the middle of Waiʻōhinu park, close to where the basketball court once was. Our family burial grounds towards the back of the property where our Kūkū Pā & Mā rest is all torn up. Animals dead. Surrounding grounds are covered in layers of thick mud. Roads currently inaccessible without 4WD.

Kālā is helpful in ensuring they have resources to tap into to continue to kōkua PLUS have space to breathe in this overwhelm of grief and need to rebuild.
