My name is Ogunniyi Omotayo. I have lived in America for almost 15 years now with chronic kidney disease. I was on the phone with a friend, telling her that I've been feeling persistent fatigue this past week that I couldn’t shake off. She advised me to see a doctor and go to the hospital for a check-up. After a series of tests, the diagnosis was heartbreaking: First, I have high blood pressure, which I didn’t know existed because I never go for checkups, and that’s what led to chronic kidney failure. At just 32 years old, I was told both my kidneys were no longer able to filter waste from my blood, and I’d need urgent dialysis or a transplant to survive. The news sent shockwaves through my family and friends. Fast forward, after 4 years of dialysis with a lot of money spent, I got transplant surgery. Within 4 months of my new kidneys, I went for a regular check-up, and the doctor said we have another disappointing result: your new kidney is rejecting. I went into a coma straight away for almost a week. I’m back to square one, 8 years now.
Despite having insurance, the costs of treatments, medications, and potential transplant surgeries are overwhelming. I’m crying for help from Good Samaritans to please help me. GOD BLESS YOU.
