Hi!

My name in Nylah and I am currently a junior in college. Next semester, in my final year of undergrad, I have been granted the incredible opportunity to study abroad in San Juan, Puerto Rico with CIEE! As a first generation student, this is truly a milestone moment for me and my family. In an effort to make this a reality, I have created this fundraiser to help me cover tuition, housing, and other necessary costs.

Being a part of the diasporic Puerto Rican community, it has always been important to me to immerse myself in the culture my family left behind in pursuit of new opportunities. With two Puerto Rican—born grandparents, I grew up admiring how they carried their cultural legacy into the life they built here in the mainland United States. Their pride and commitment instilled in me a deep appreciation for my heritage. Beyond the stories and family memories, I want to experience the island not only as a visitor, but as an individual eager to learn from its people, land spaces, and lived realities.

This program represents the opportunity to transform that desire into meaningful engagement—to deepen my understanding of Puerto Rico’s history, culture, and traditions while building a more authentic connection to the island that has always shaped my identity.

¡Hola!

Mi nombre es Nylah y actualmente soy estudiante de tercer año en la universidad. El próximo semestre, en mi último año de licenciatura, he recibido la increíble oportunidad de estudiar en el extranjero en San Juan, Puerto Rico con CIEE. Como estudiante de primera generación, este es verdaderamente un momento importante para mí y mi familia. Con el fin de hacer esto realidad, he creado esta recaudación de fondos para ayudarme a cubrir la matrícula, la vivienda y otros gastos necesarios.

Como puertorriqueña de la diáspora, siempre ha sido importante para mí sumergirme en la cultura que mi familia dejó atrás en busca de nuevas oportunidades. Con dos abuelos nacidos en Puerto Rico, crecí admirando cómo llevaron su legado cultural a la vida que construyeron aquí en los Estados Unidos continentales. Su orgullo y compromiso me inculcaron una profunda apreciación por mi herencia. Más allá de las historias y los recuerdos familiares, quiero experimentar la isla no solo como visitante, sino como una persona con el deseo de aprender de su gente, sus espacios y sus realidades vividas.

Este programa representa la oportunidad de transformar ese deseo en una experiencia significativa: profundizar mi comprensión de la historia, la cultura y las tradiciones de Puerto Rico, mientras construyo una conexión más auténtica con la isla que siempre ha formado mi identidad.
