Hi, my name is Nyla Johnson, and I’m a full-time nursing student at Howard University, pursuing my dream of becoming a psychiatric nurse. Mental health is a cause close to my heart—especially in underserved and minority communities, where it’s too often ignored. I’m committed to changing that. I want to be the nurse who truly listens, understands, and helps people heal both emotionally and physically.

I’m a proud first-generation college student from the South Side of Chicago. Getting accepted into Howard’s competitive and prestigious nursing program was a dream come true. I’ve worked relentlessly to get to this point, balancing academics with a deep commitment to leadership and service.

At Howard, I’ve built a life centered around giving back. I co-founded Bison Bridges, a mentorship program that partners with alternative high school students in D.C., teaching about mental health, college readiness, and self-worth. I also serve on the executive board of Precious Pearls Youth Outreach, where I lead workshops throughout the city to empower young girls and help them grow into strong, confident leaders.

But now, I’m facing a heartbreaking challenge.

Due to increased tuition and housing costs, I’m at risk of having to leave Howard. I’m currently on a payment plan, but the university needs the rest of the balance immediately. My parents and I have tried to take out additional loans, but we’ve been denied. We've done everything we can, and I’m out of options.

Howard isn’t just my school—it’s my home. I’ve found a family here, and I’ve built a purpose here. I’m asking for help to stay.
