Support Nova's Recovery from IVDD Surgery

Hi friends and animal lovers, my name is Genavie and I have a 7 year old dachshund, Nova. She is an energetic, silly, and adorable sweet girl who has been by my side through tough losses, milestones, and memorable moments.

As of four weeks ago, Nova began showing signs of reduced energy and hind leg weakness, leading to balancing and walking issues. A visit to the vet resulted in a diagnoses of Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), which is a condition that affects the spinal discs. This can lead to symptoms such as pain, weakness, and in severe cases, loss of mobility and function in the limbs.

Despite all efforts, Nova's condition deteriorated further, and by this week, she had exhausted her medications and was experiencing significant distress. She was unable to use her back legs completely and showed muscle loss and bladder control issues.

Nova was seen yesterday (June 23) at a specialized neurology hospital. They extently discussed IVDD, pain management options, and surgery. Following this consultation, an MRI and surgery were recommended as the best course to alleviate Nova's pain and discomfort while aiming for her to regain use of her legs. After agreeing to this care plan, Nova's MRI provided clear insight to her spinal disc being the only issue and she was immediately taken for surgery.

The doctor called post surgery and said they were able to get a good look at her spine and removed a large amount of disc material. Overall, the surgery went great and they will repeat a neuro exam to confirm that she is stable. Her recovery will be a minimum of 4-6 weeks of restricted activity, physical therapy, and medication.

This was an unexpected medical expense that I was not at all prepared for.
