Last week’s storm in Nashville changed everything for one small business that means so much to so many of us — Nova Market & Café.

After losing power for more than 48 hours, Nova was forced to discard nearly 90% of its frozen and refrigerated inventory. For days, there was no full electricity, no heat, and appliances could not function properly. Only today did the store finally regain full power for the first time, allowing heat and all equipment to work as they should.

Despite every effort to save what could be saved, only a very small amount of food was salvaged — and even that was pure luck.

The loss included everything Nova serves and sells: fresh vegetables, salads, eggs, prepared foods, meats, cold cuts, frozen items, dairy, and specialty kosher products. Food that took days to prepare, thousands of dollars to purchase, and an incredible amount of care and intention — all gone.

In total, the damages are estimated at $22,000–$25,000.

What makes this situation even more difficult is that insurance does not cover this type of loss, meaning Ornit and Nova are carrying the full financial impact alone. In order to reopen fully and continue serving the community, nearly the entire inventory had to be replaced from scratch.

Nova is not just a store.

It is a place of community — a place where people gather, feel welcomed, and feel seen. Nova consistently shows up for others, donating, supporting causes, and helping families and community events whenever possible.

Now, it’s time for us to show up for Nova.

We are asking for $25,000 to help replenish inventory and cover essential operating expenses such as rent, electricity, and water, so Nova can stay open and continue serving the community it cares so deeply about.
