Support North Westmeath hospice on behalf of Michael Tierney

Nobody likes to think about hospices. The idea of going to a place away from home to live out the final chapter of your life isn’t something any of us would like to be faced with. The decision to move to North Westmeath Hospice certainly wasn’t one my uncle Michael (Mick) Tierney wanted to make. Seeing his beloved wife Carmel pass from cancer in 2014 and having battled this horrible disease himself twice, he felt like it was giving up but once he took the brave decision not to receive chemo he knew he was going to need care beyond what he could receive at home.

However any of his preconceptions about a hospice being a place of sadness where it was a matter of waiting for the inevitable couldn’t be further from reality.

Michael loved music, cars and tales from bygone eras. But most of all he loved a chat. The staff at North Westmeath hospice were exceptional in ensuring he was able to indulge in his passions in those final weeks. Friends brought him model cars, there were constant music sessions, a stream of friends old and new by his bedside and his loyal companion Patch was even invited in. Nothing was too much trouble and particularly in those more difficult times the staff went the extra mile always with a smile, making what should have been a time of sadness instead a time filled with happiness, laughter and warmth.

The service North Westmeath Hospice provided not only to Michael and our family but to all who come through its doors needs to be recognised. Had they not been there for those final weeks the last chapter of his life would have been a very different experience for both him and our family.

I would therefore, as we have just passed his 1 year anniversary like to do something small to show our appreciation and support on behalf of Michael.

I would be really thankful for any donation no matter how small. All will go directly to the hospice to ensure they can continue to offer the same support and kindness to those who need it.
