Help our Nokomis Yoga Neighbor Families Sheltering in Place
Urgent Support needed for Minneapolis Families Sheltering in Place
Given current events, a family and extended family members in Minneapolis with 3 infants (2 and 3 weeks old, and 3 months old) and 5 other young children has been sheltering in place since mid-December. ICE has already come by their homes, and several members of their family have been detained and deported. The parents have been unable to work for fear of detention and family separation. Please join Nokomis Yoga in helping this family cover rent and utilities until ICE leaves the Twin Cities through this GoFundMe fundraising page.
Update: While the family members are beginning to go back to work and school, support is still needed to compensate for lost wages. Thank you so much for your help.
March Update: The funds collected to this point went to keeping the families homes together, paying the rent and utilities for this 35-person extended family. They are so grateful! We still need additional funds to support them during this time as work is not readily accessible right now for many of these folks. Thank you so much for your continuing to care and offer support. The funds are being distributed by us personally so we are getting it to where it is most needed.
March 11 update
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you everyone for your generosity in helping support our Nokomis neighbors affected by the ICE operation. With your donations, we were successfully able to cover rent and utilities for this extended family of 6 households and 35 people. And your physical donations of diapers, toiletries, and toys for the children added peace of mind and some joy for them during this trying time. They are so appreciative of this community and send their profound gratitude.
The families are beginning to venture out again to find work, and the children are returning to in-person classes at their schools. The transition to finding full-time work has been tough, though
and we are hoping to help fill in the financial gap so they can pay rent this month and stay in their homes. The GoFundMe will continue to accept donations, as we help this extended family get back on its feet.
Thank you for your ongoing support as we put our yoga practice into action— recognizing our shared humanity, lending a hand to those in need, and trusting that better days are ahead.
