Support Noel's Recovery from Devastating Accident
Donation protected
Noel M.—a dedicated husband, father, hardworking employee and lover of the outdoors—recently experienced a devastating accident while on a family trip in Canada. During a hike with his wife, Nancy, and step-daughter, Olivia, Noel slipped on uneven ground and suffered severe injuries to both legs, tearing both of his primary tendons. This injury required emergency surgery and has left Noel unable to walk, facing a long, difficult recovery far from his home in Maryland.
Although Noel has reliable health insurance, many critical expenses are not covered because his injury occurred outside of the U.S., leaving our family with significant medical bills.
Current Situation & Financial Needs
The Accident & Initial Surgery
Following the accident, Noel was quickly transported to the hospital in Canada, where he underwent successful surgery on both legs. However, the Canadian insurance covered only the first four days of his hospital stay, including the surgery. We now face uncovered costs amounting to $110,000 for Noel’s remaining time in the Canadian hospital.
Continued Care & Rehabilitation Challenges
Once Noel was stable, he and our family worked tirelessly to arrange a medical transfer from Canada to a U.S. facility. However, due to the nature of his injuries—both legs are currently non-weight-bearing—he was not eligible for admittance to an acute hospital or a traditional inpatient rehabilitation center. After several days of searching and managing his own case, he finally secured a place in a skilled nursing facility that can provide the care he needs for the next three weeks. Unfortunately, insurance does not cover this level of care, which comes to $14,250 a month plus an additional $4,000 for housing, food and transportation for his wife. After a couple weeks in the skilled nursing facility, Noel will become eligible for rehabilitation at a new medical center, which is thankfully covered by his insurance. This final stage of treatment will be significant in gradually helping him build the strength to begin walking again and ultimately travel back home to the east coast.
Additional Costs
As Noel continues his journey toward recovery, the financial strain has only grown. We face several other expenses, including:
Urgent care ($1,500) for an infection and injury acquired in the hospital.
Transportation cost to Seattle ($910).
Ongoing medical bills (approx. $2,500) from his surgery.
Airfare back home to Maryland ($1,200).
Total Uncovered Medical Costs: ~$124,000
With a total of ~$124,000 in uncovered medical costs, we are reaching out to friends, family, and kind individuals to help us support Noel through this challenging time.
How You Can Help
We are incredibly grateful to have had immediate help from EMS and the local medical team to ensure Noel received the surgery he needed. Now, we are focused on making sure he receives the care required for a full recovery.
To help alleviate the financial burden, we have created this GoFundMe page. Any contribution, large or small, will go directly toward Noel’s medical and rehabilitation expenses. If you are unable to donate, sharing this page or any resources for organizations that may assist with uncovered medical expenses would also mean the world to us.
Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and support. Noel’s journey to recovery is just beginning, and with your help, we are hopeful for his safe return home.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Noel, Nancy, Montana, Bella, Milan, and Olivia
