Please Support Noble’s Fight Against Nasopharyngeal Cancer
My name is Sister Kelechi. Originally from Nigeria, I am a U.S citizen living at a convent in New York and assigned to work as a Nurse’s Aide. The little money I earn supports my two nephews who live in Nigeria —I am their sole guardian. Sadly, my teenage nephew Noble was recently diagnosed with stage 3 Nasopharyngeal Cancer. Needless to say, this diagnosis has been devastating and overwhelming for us.
Often referred to as NPC, Nasopharyngeal Cancer is a type of head and neck cancer. Some of the symptoms of NPC include headaches, facial weakness and numbness, pain and difficulty opening the jaw, double vision, and misalignment of eyes, all of which my nephew has experienced. Noble’s cancer is in an advanced stage, meaning it has spread beyond the nasopharynx to lymph nodes in the neck and other areas.
My dear nephew has had to deal with so much in his life and now this horrible disease. Unfortunately, Nigeria is a very poor country and healthcare is limited and Noble doesn’t have health insurance. We wanted to bring him to the United States for treatment, but it was very complicated and expensive to do so, and since time was of the essence, we had to proceed at a hospital in Nigeria. For the hospital to accept him in the first place, I had to beg for him to be treated and promise to pay all of Noble’s medical bills within a reasonable amount of time.
To date, Noble has had one surgical procedure to better define the cancer and nine chemotherapy treatments. Since the chemo leaves him very weak, Noble has had to take numerous blood transfusions to strengthen him. Unfortunately, wait times for the transfusions are longer than they should be due to the scarcity and cost of blood. Noble will be getting radiation treatments at another hospital in Nigeria as soon as he is strong enough to proceed and they have availability to accommodate him. While I believe the doctors are doing their best to help him, so much surrounding his care in the current hospital is limited because of the poor conditions there, including lack of updated equipment and technology, fewer available treatment options, and sanitary concerns also.
Along with praying for a cure for Noble’s cancer, I have been praying for guidance on how to deal with these mounting bills. I had never heard of GoFundMe when it was suggested to me as a possible solution for Noble’s medical expenses. The reality is that I have no other option but to rely on the generosity of kind people who care enough to contribute whatever they can to help us in the fight to save Noble’s life. And I haven’t given up on the hope to bring Noble to the United States for evaluation and follow-up care, and with your kind help and support, that may be possible.
Please pray for Noble and help us in this difficult journey. A Trust for Noble has been set up to receive donations for his medical bills and other expenses for his care. We appreciate any contribution you can make. Please share this story to help us reach as many caring people as we can. Thank you for your generosity, compassion, and prayers. God bless you.
