Njord’s Story — Help Us Get Him the Treatment He Needs

Our journey with Njord began when he was around two and a half to three years old, and we received the life-changing diagnosis of autism. At that time, our family was uneducated and unaware of what autism truly meant, and it was a challenging period of adjustment for all of us. Over time, we learned to see the world through Njord's eyes and became his biggest advocates.

Njord is a truly special boy who finds immense joy in music, especially the guitar, and he has a deep love for books and his emotional awareness is remarkable.

When I was younger around 14ish, I asked my mom if I could go with her to one of Njord’s doctor appointments. She asked me why, and I didn’t really know how to explain it — I just felt like I needed to be there. Without thinking too much, I told her, “I want to help.”

I didn’t know then how much those words would shape my life.

After that appointment, I silently promised myself — and promised Njord and my mom — that I would help him in any way I could. I went to every doctor’s visit, every physical therapy session, every speech therapy appointment. I watched my mom fight for him day after day, determined to get him the help he needed to grow and thrive. I knew I could never truly understand the depth of her struggle because I’m not a mother, but I could stand beside her. And I could be there for Njord.

Over the years, we’ve tried so many different therapies and treatments. But one of the most impactful things Njord has ever experienced was stem cell treatment. The changes we saw in him after his first treatment were incredible — improvements in his focus, his communication, and his overall progress. It gave us hope.

When Njord underwent his first round of stem cell treatment, we noticed a profound change. He even told us, "The pain is going away," which meant everything to us.

Now, our goal is to get Njord as many treatments as possible before he reaches puberty. This is a critical window — before puberty, the brain has a higher level of plasticity, meaning it’s more adaptable and receptive to change. Once puberty begins, this plasticity decreases, making it much harder for treatments to have the same effect. We know that getting him these treatments now could make a lifelong difference.
