My name is Nitin Paliwal, and I am a Ph.D. candidate in Applied Geology at Kent State University. I am reaching out because my family is facing an overwhelming crisis. My mother, Sunita, was recently diagnosed with stage 4 Diffuse T-cell/histiocyte-rich large B-cell lymphoma (THRLBCL), and my father is a chronic kidney disease (Stage 3b) patient. They both live in India, and their medical needs have placed a tremendous financial strain on us.
My mother requires hospitalization and treatment every two weeks, with each visit costing around $700 and lasting three days. We have spent all our savings just on her diagnosis in the last two months. Recently, our health insurance claim was denied, as the company called it a pre-existing illness, even though we only recently learned the type and severity of her condition. She is experiencing severe symptoms, including swelling and dangerously low hemoglobin, requiring blood transfusions. The doctors say her lymphoma is treatable, but the costs are overwhelming.
As an international student, I am only allowed to 20 hrs/week. I earn $950 a month and send $400 to India to help with my mother's medical expenses and my father's care. While it isn't much, it is vital for their well-being.
I have explored university resources and emergency assistance, but I do not qualify for available programs. I am committed to completing my doctoral studies and supporting my family, but I need help to get through this incredibly challenging time.
