Nina, my friend and a single mother, was enjoying a joyful evening with her two children at the Cabo Verde watch party in Brockton. After the event, they stopped at an impromptu street party, dancing and celebrating with their community. Suddenly, gunfire broke out, and Nina and her children were caught in the crossfire as they tried to escape. Tragically, Nina was shot three times.

Nina is a massage therapist and the sole provider for her family. Because of her injuries, she will be unable to work for several months. Her employer does not offer benefits, and she is not eligible for any leave, leaving her family in a very difficult situation. The stress of medical recovery is compounded by the worry of paying rent, bills, and buying groceries for her children.
