Niko, my son, has been bravely fighting chronic kidney disease since infancy. His condition was caused by a congenital defect called posterior urethral valve, which wasn’t discovered until he was just 5 months old. By then, the damage to his kidneys and bladder was catastrophic, and today his kidneys function at only 18%. Despite these challenges, Niko has shown incredible strength and resilience every day.
We recently received the hopeful news that Niko’s paternal uncle, his dad’s brother, has been approved as a living donor. The transplant surgery is expected to take place between September and November, depending on the hospital’s schedule. This gift of life means everything to our family, but it also brings new challenges. As Niko’s sole caregiver, I will need to take time off work to support him through surgery and recovery. Funds raised will help cover loss of wages, bills, and necessities while we are out of work. Some support will also go to Niko’s uncle and his family, who are generously stepping forward as donors and will face their own expenses and loss of income during this time.
While we navigate this difficult time, I also know times are hard for everyone right now. Our family would appreciate any help that is received. We appreciate everyone who has been following Niko’s kidney journey and hope that the funds donated will help our families as they are recovering from the beautiful gift of life that Niko will be receiving.
