Most of you know the story, and if you don't, please don't hesitate to ask (and I have some really fun photos for those of you who like gross stuff).

Long story short: I developed osteomyelitis in my foot. Despite bi-weekly podiatrist care and several courses of major antibiotics, the infection got seriously out of control and I had to go to the ER. I was admitted Thursday, Jan 22nd, and I was released today (Wed, January 28). My prognosis is positive for full recovery, even though it'll take time.

I refused to go to the ER sooner because I had no one who could care for Augie. He's a big boy, and he is very enthusiastic. He is not a dog that most people can walk safely. We've made huge strides since I got him, but there's no way I can take care of him with ten stitches in my foot, a boot, and doctor's orders to only put 10% of my weight on that foot. My lovely family organized boarding for him - as well as the training he very much needs - but the cost is staggering (I'm not saying that it's not worth it, I'm sure it is, I just had no idea what something like that cost). I found out today what my family will be paying for him to be trained and boarded for 4-6 weeks while I recover, and I nearly died. The thing is, I can't give him up. I know he'll be a better dog for this. But I also feel like a terrible burden to the people I love.

I have a PCP, who I see regularly. I've lost over 30 lbs in the last 6 months. My A1C is vastly improved. I am committed to my health. Unfortunately, major medical insurance has not been an affordable option for me. I have paid for what I needed out of pocket and tried to avoid emergencies...until I couldn't.

I'm not destitute. I am self-employed and have been for over a decade. I love what I do. I will do everything I can to pick up more work to pay for the bills that will be forthcoming.

I need IV antibiotics and weekly appointments at a wound care clinic for the next six weeks minimum. I received some financial assistance from the IV meds company that reduced my burden significantly - so my portion of the IV antibiotics is $536 out of pocket. I paid half of that up front today.

I will work hard to pay whatever is coming at me. I know that I can set up payment plans for hospital bills. I don't have credit cards with a high limit that could withstand the more immediate debts of wound care, doc appointments, and Augie's boarding + training.

Nobody owes me anything and I take full responsibility for the situation I'm in. Certainly, things are tough for many right now. This quite honestly is embarrassing as hell, but if you feel inclined to offer even the most minimal assistance, I would be grateful.

GoFundMe does take a percentage of donations, so if you would prefer to send it another way, I'm happy to provide you with my PayPal or Zelle (just not in a public forum).

Humbly and with great appreciation,
Nikki
