Support Nick's Recovery from a Cervical Spinal Injury

Hi Everyone,

My name is Ellen and I am Nick’s sister, I would greatly appreciate if you could take the time to read my brother’s tragic story.

Nick was visiting his son Cooper for the weekend in Upper Michigan as he regularly does. This weekend a very unexpected accident happened and Nick unfortunately slipped on black ice and took a bad fall. It was in the early morning hours and due to the severeness of his fall, he couldn’t move or make any loud noises. He helplessly laid there for about 45 minutes until help finally arrived. He was transported by ambulance to the hospital where the doctor’s discovered that a number of vertebrae in his neck were broken causing a cervical spinal cord injury. They performed emergency surgery, in which they placed two titanium rods with twelve nuts and bolts to stabilize his neck. Unfortunately, because of the cervical spinal cord injury, he has no movement from his shoulders down and is still in the ICU, but very thankful to be out of critical condition and off a ventilator.

Once he is discharged from the hospital, he will be moved into a rehabilitation facility to begin his long road to recovery. With this type of injury, it is unknown how much movement he will be able to regain. Being a dad and unable to work, I am trying to help ease the financial burden for him so he can concentrate solely on healing, as with this type of injury it is unknown how much use of his arms or legs, he will be able to regain.
