On March 13th my brother-in-law had a life saving surgery to fix a rare condition called malrotation. This causes his intestines to rotate on itself, cutting off blood supply. He is left with a 14 inch incision on his abdomen and is on the road to recovery.
I’m raising funds on behalf of the Camarella family to offset medical expenses they may incur during this time. They are unsure when he will be able to get back to work. Lindsay just had her third baby and my parents are there helping with the girls while Nick is in Cleveland with his parents. Mia and I will be there in a few weeks. I don't want them to have to worry.
Nick has always been there for our family since Lindsay introduced him into our lives. He has been such a positive role model to Mia and now his own girls - Caroline (6), Lilly (4), and Audrey (newborn).
Nick’s Story:
Ever since he was a kid he often experienced intense stomach pain, usually after indulging in greasy fast food. The pain would last for days, leaving him hunched over on the couch until he finally vomited—an act that instantly relieved the discomfort. This would intensify into adulthood. Doctors would either dismiss the pain as a bad case of indigestion and one case a misdiagnosis of lactose intolerance.
It wasn’t until he experienced an episode so intense he was rushed to the ER by Lindsay. After imaging, the ER doctor informed him that he needed surgery to relieve a life-threatening volvulus and that he had a congenital condition called intestinal malrotation. Malrotation is a birth defect that causes the intestines to be positioned incorrectly. Volvulus is where a loop of the intestine twists around itself, blocking the flow of food and blood.
Through some research my mom found Dr. Kareem at the Cleveland Clinic who specializes in this type of surgery.
