On February 26, our dear nephew and son, brother, grandson, and friend to many, Nick Brennan, experienced a devastating spinal cord injury while doing what he loves most—skiing with his family. He was making his way toward the lift line when he unexpectedly crashed, and his life changed in an instant. Nick was airlifted to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Grand Junction, where doctors discovered that several bones in the middle of his spine were severely broken and dislocated, causing a serious spinal cord injury. Surgeons performed a complex 12-hour operation to stabilize his spine, which required fusing a large section of his back, removing one of the damaged vertebrae, and spending ten days in the ICU. As a result of the injury, Nick now has paralysis from the T7 level—around the middle of his torso—down. While his life has changed in unimaginable ways, we are incredibly grateful that Nick has full use of his arms and that his kind heart, strong spirit, positive attitude and brilliant mind remain exactly as we have always known and loved them.
As Nick continues his recovery, he will need significant medical care, specialized equipment, and ongoing support to safely return home and continue his medical residency in Milwaukee. This includes adaptive medical equipment, in-home health supplies, and important modifications to his home and vehicle, so they are accessible and safe for someone living with paralysis while also providing care for others. Simple daily tasks that many people take for granted—getting in and out of bed, moving through a home, or traveling to medical appointments—now require specialized equipment and thoughtfully adapted spaces. Additional financial resources will help ensure Nick has access to the therapies, tools, and modifications he needs to protect his health, regain as much independence as possible, and continue pursuing his dream of becoming an anesthesiologist.
If you feel moved to do so, we humbly ask that you consider contributing to support Nick’s recovery. Your kindness and generosity will help give him the resources he needs to move forward and continue building a meaningful, active life surrounded by the people who love him.
