This is Nick and his dog Lucy! They have been homeless for 3 years, and Lucy is his entire world. Although not formally trained, Lucy is Nicks protector, and stays by his side 24/7. Nick previously worked in construction, building million dollar houses but got an injury in his knee and neck leaving him with nerve damage and paralysis. Shortly thereafter Nick lost his wife. However, Nick still had his dog, Lucy. Being left without a job or way to work, grieving his partner, and lacking a form of income Nick fell behind on medical and other bills, leaving him in a tough spot. Now Nick and his dog Lucy live in a tent in South St. Louis, and Nicks only form of medical support is the crutches he uses to get around, or kind people that help him get from place to place. Despite his injuries and struggles nearly every day him and his dog come and sit at the exit for Arsenal Street in Soulard, which is how I met these beautiful souls. Over several visits with the two I have came to know them, and their struggles. Nick has told me, “I don’t know what I would do without here, she is my queen, my world,” but throughout my time with them, I can tell his dog Lucy feels the same about him. Nick told me, “I hate that I can’t work, I don’t want to sit out here and pan-handle all day, but what more can I do?”, that’s where we can help. As winter approaches in St. Louis and temperatures begin to drop drastically, a thin plastic tent is no great shelter for anyone. I want to raise money to help find Nick and Lucy housing in the St. Louis area this winter, and hopefully, permanently with time. Moreover, I want to help find Nick a steady source of income, despite his disabilities. The financial burden that an injury or illness can place on someone is something many people are all too familiar with. However, Nick and Lucy’s story is the unfortunate reality and reminder of how one un-planned and unfortunate moment can be life altering. I want this fundraiser to serve as an ongoing to mission to aid Nick and Lucy in getting back on their feet, and rebuilding their life. 100% profits from this fundraising will be directly poured into medical aid, food, and housing for Nick and his dog Lucy.
