Support NHD Philly 2021! Communication in History

Tax deductible

What is National History Day?  It's much more than a competition!

National History Day is a highly regarded academic program with a track record for improving student and teacher achievement.  Each year, over 800,000 middle- and high-school students and tens of thousands of teachers in American schools throughout the world participate in this year-long educational program that culminates in a national contest every June.

Students who participate in NHD perform better on high-stakes tests, have honed writing skills, are more confident and capable researchers, and have a mature perspective on current events and civic engagement.  NHD students are more likely to be workplace-ready, thanks to their experience with critical thinking, creative problem solving, and communication in competition.  Studies show 79% of NHD students could digest, analyze, and synthesize information, compared to 61% of their non-NHD peers; 85% of NHD students receive passing or exemplary marks in writing, compared to 62% of their non-NHD peers.

For more than a decade, National History Day Philadelphia (NHD Philly) has sponsored and managed both the Philadelphia district program of NHD and the regional competition.  The students who participate in NHD Philly are local Philadelphia-area students, from various middle and high schools throughout the region.

NHD Philly students design projects related to a nationally-chosen theme each year. Hundreds of students will participate in NHD Philly through writing papers, building websites, creating documentaries, exhibits and performances - all around this year's theme, Communication in History - the Key to Understanding.

Given the continued COVID-19 pandemic, this year's program will happen entirely virtual. Participating students will share their original research projects to compete for the chance to present their work at the statewide competition at National History Day Pennsylvania, and then potentially to go on to the national competition.

Led by the National Archives at Philadelphia , the NHD Philly program is supported by more than 40 cultural institutions and partners. These partners need your help to fund this year's program, to give the students access to a one-of-a-kind experience to engage with history.

How can you help?
Help us reach our goal of $5,000 for this year's campaign. These funds will enable NHD Philly to provide the resources for the regional program. It will help fund everything from posters, markers, and the many other supplies the students need to complete, not to mention help with barriers to competing in a virtual manner. Your generosity will ensure that every student is able to participate in the program.

With continued cutbacks with the School District of Philadelphia, many teachers struggle to equip their classrooms with even basic supplies.  Presentation boards, and other costs associated with NHD, are often considered an unaffordable luxury.  Without these necessary supplies, students are at a disadvantage.  However, with your help, NHD Philly can provide students with the supplies needed - and enable NHD Philly to cover the costs of competition!

What happens when I donate?
You will receive an e-mail from GoFundme confirming your donation. The e-mail will list The National Constitution Center (NCC) as the recipient of your gift. NCC will not keep any funds raised through this campaign - 100% of your donation will go to NHD Philly. The National Constitution Center is a fiscal agent, and program partner, for NHD Philly, and a 501(c)3 non-profit, which allows your gift to be tax-deductible.
