A couple months ago as I watched the news from Afghanistan I also read an article about organizations in Chicago that would be supporting refugee families when they arrived. I signed up to "adopt" a family. There is a group of local friends that has been working to provide information, resources and all the things this family will need in their new apartment which was furnished at the barest level.
The father in our adopted family is an interpreter out of Kabul. He is here with his wife and 4 children (girl-6, girl-5, boy-3, boy-18 mos).
The organizing group Refugee Community Connection has a free store and many donations. To the greatest extent possible we'll be sourcing gently used items. Some things will have to be new however and then there are things like rent and heat and diapers to be covered.
If you're local to Chicago and want to see new items they may need as they adjust to their first month here, please request to join our private facebook group . If you're able to contribute financially, please consider doing so. This isn't a formal non-profit, there is no tax write-off, but these are people in need who deserve a warm welcome to the United States. We will be as frugal as possible with all donated funds in order to be able to hand over as much cash as possible to the family before their first Chicago winter.
Thank you!
-Karen
