On November 1st normal life got flipped upside down. After a couple weeks of feeling very tired, stomach discomfort and jaundice, Nes took himself to the ER. With elevated liver enzymes they thought he had a hepatitis virus. Scary, but we though it would just be treated and back to normal. Unfortunately, it wasn't that simple. He started declining rather quickly in the hospital. His liver enzymes rising and his ammonia levels were in a danger zone that could cause brain damage and/or coma. After a 13 day hospital stay, CT scan, MRI, paracentesis ( draining of abdominal fluid), blood tests and a liver biopsy he was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis caused by an autoimmune disease (autoimmune hepatitis). He was told that a liver transplant would be his best option. They discharged him and told him he needs to see a hepatologist (liver specialist) ASAP. Seeing a hepatologist and GI doctor are the only way he get started on being listed for a liver transplant. Without health insurance this is a challenge and it's a time sensitive matter. He's currently prescribed 3 medications. 2 of which will keep his ammonia levels down seeing his liver is not doing this for him. He's paying for 2 out of pocket , but the third and most important is $2000/month.
This has all been very traumatic and stressful for him and his loved ones. He's an amazing father to 3 boys and a furbaby. He's also the very best friend anyone could ask for. Any support would be greatly appreciated.
