No podía trabajar.

No sé.

Hi everyone, my name is Nelson Alvarez. I'm 56 years old, and I was diagnosed with coronary heart disease back in 2007. That was my first scare. I was terrified that I was going to lose my then 4-year-old daughter. I've been through seven heart attacks in 18 years; that's seven stents implanted in me to this day. But by the grace of God, I'm still standing.

I'm divorced and I have two kids: my daughter Lindajean, who's 21, and my son Yeshu, who is 8 years old. You see, I'm a man of faith! And I have faith that I will see them graduate from college. I have faith that I'll see them get married and have children, and I have faith that I'll be surrounded by grandkids calling me grandpa one day.

I was working at Gateway Marina when I had the first heart attack. That weakened me, and I was out of work for several years, but thank God I got better by 2017. In that year, I returned to work at Moonbeam Gateway Marina in Brooklyn. I worked for 4 years; that was the best job I ever had. I met people who sailed from all over the world and reconnected with old friends who were happy to see me again. What a beautiful community! I'm still good friends with many of them to this day!

In the year 2020, I lost my job due to COVID, then chaos rained down on us with the pandemic. A few months later, I caught the virus. That was really, really bad; the virus weakened me. I thought I was going to die, but by the grace of God, I survived that too! A year later, I found a job through a friend from the marina who was the principal of a school in Brooklyn, and I started working at PS 200 in Benson as a teacher's assistant. I loved that job; that was a great life experience. That's when I noticed that my body was very weak. It was difficult to go up the stairs at the train station. It was so hard to walk long distances that I got a scooter to move around. It helped me a lot; that's my main means of transportation. I call it my faithful donkey, lol!

In January 2021, I was having chest pain, so I called 911, and that's when they found out I had another obstruction. That put the nail in the coffin in regards to my health. I couldn't work. I applied for SSI many times and was denied time and time again. I don't know why, but I still trust God!

I had a friend that helped me for a while. He used to pay me to guard his plumbing truck while he worked; that was a blessing. And then I had to go and get help from the Human Resources office so I could get EBT assistance and housing. I had CityFHEPS housing assistance for a while; that's a blessing. It helped me a lot with housing because I wasn't able to work. I'm so thankful for that!

Three weeks ago, I had another heart attack. That weakened me to the max, and to add to that, I'm facing an eviction. After 7 years of living in a room, the owners decided they wanted the apartment back. I received an eviction notice from The New York City Marshals office stating that I had 14 days to vacate!

That was in November. I went to court, and with no hesitation, the judge made the judgment of eviction by December 31st, New Year's Eve, right in the middle of winter.

Three days later, I started having chest pains and fatigue. I guess the stress triggered a heart attack once again. I gave the court plenty of proof of my illnesses with my discharge papers from Mercy Hospital in Long Island, but I guess he didn't care much for me.

Why is this happening to me? I don't know. All I know is that I'm trusting God. I'm a man of faith!

I've been in a shelter system once in my lifetime because of a fire next door that caused water damage to our place. The shelter system in New York City is a very harsh environment, and I don't want to go through that again, especially in my condition, and that's why I'm asking for your help today.

At this moment, I'm disabled, and I have no income or anyone who can lend a hand.

In my condition, winter is not going to help me, so at this moment, I just need to put my belongings in a storage unit and give my pets up for adoption. I have two African Sulcata tortoises and a bearded dragon. I was hoping somebody could take care of my babies, but there's no one to care for them. I'm more concerned about them than I am for myself, but the situation doesn't give me any other choice.

At this moment, the only choice I have is to stay in a cheap motel until I can finish my doctor's appointments and get the medications I need. Then I'll go to Puerto Rico until my health improves so I can come back to New York and apply for housing.

I'm blessed to have a place to stay in Puerto Rico at my disposal. My cousin's help is all I needed, and that gives me comfort and peace of mind for now!

I have housing assistance, but I can't find a place in my condition. At this moment, I'm just putting my trust in God's hands. Something good will come out of all of this; I know it in my heart. I want to thank everyone beforehand, and if you can find it in your heart to help, I will be eternally indebted to you. Keep me in your prayers. God bless!
