Earlier this spring, my personal information was stolen and leaked to the dark web. This occurred in connection with an issue I wasn’t familiar with, cryptojacking and unauthorized Bitcoin miners. The impact made it clear to the complicated web of connections we live with today. Some things were obvious, and some caught me completely off-guard. Credit cards were painless the bank took care of that within a week. In addition to my SSN and other sensitive data showing up on the dark web, of my passwords wound up out there too. I was locked out of my PC and email accounts for the better part of a week in early May. During that time, I missed a critical email requesting authorization for a bi-annual background check renewal required for my primary job. Because of this, the renewal was delayed, and I was unable to work for two weeks while the background check was reprocessed—a disruption that significantly impacted both my income and financial stability. I also had emails deleted. They couldn’t change my passwords without TFA, but it took me a while to figure out what was going on. Getting the money back from unauthorized credit card purchases was easy, but there was a cascade effect, late payments invalidating arrangements requiring me to pay bills in full etc, at the same time I had an income shortfall. I started this GFM a few weeks ago and delayed putting it up hoping I would be able to close the gap, instead I simply delayed the need.
The total here is what I need to level off before September and avoid an escalation of the problem
$237.14 to Evergy by August 22
$228.00 to State Farm by August 25
$110.00 to T-Mobile by August 30
$78.00 to Midco by August 30
$150.00 credit card payments, etc. Sept 5th
$ 175.00 Gas, groceries
$1,160.00 due by September 1 for rent (increased by $140.00)
This comes to $1988.00, give or take about 300.00 that’s where it’s been since May. I’ll be under half that by Sept 1st, and no matter how I add it up, late fees and other hassles will result in another shortfall. I discovered with short notice my return to another job will be delayed by a few weeks, I’m going to have to figure that in as well. All of this takes time and resources that can impact my long term. I have projects I’ve been working on for years, side gigs that pay off well, provided I have the time and resources to keep up with them. If DST hadn’t been demolished by a takeover, I’d probably still be there. After a certain age, being in the workforce changes. I was told many years ago the best strategy was to find a need and fill it. Finding a place with that need that will pay you a reasonable wage for a reasonable workload. It can be done, and it generally involves playing the long game. I’ve been doing that, and I need stable housing to do it, especially for WFH or hybrid situations.
So, I’d really appreciate any assistance you can provide. I’ve spent the last 3 months trying to close this gap. It’s been difficult to talk to people about these issues without it coming across as dry begging. But this is where things are at right now. If anyone has any questions about any of this, please feel free to contact me. I’ve kept some details to a minimum as advised by good counsel. I’d also be happy to share information about cryptojacking fraud and the name of the company I engaged to help me with this. I am no longer on the dark web, in fact my SSN was scrubbed in less than two weeks, everything within a month or two. I can’t answer questions about cryptofraud and how it works, I had to have it explained to me. I listened, but at a certain point it was like the voice of the teachers in a Charlie Brown special, “wah-wah-wah, wah, wah, wah”. Also, your router passwords, I hadn’t changed mine in 5 years. I can’t really explain that either, other than to say count how may devices you have using it on any given day. I’d rather not endorse a company here, but I did research the one I went with and I think I made the right choice.
