In May 2023 at the age of 32, I received the news that no one ever wants to hear, “you have cancer”. I was diagnosed with stage four colorectal cancer that had metastasized to one of my ovaries. I have undergone surgery and several rounds of chemotherapy. Unfortunately I was told my oncologist that there is no cure but thankfully it scans have shown that the mass is stable. Along with being diagnosed with cancer, I have Crohn’s disease as well that I’ve battled since the age of six.

In 2018 I started my own business, creating desserts and I have always been very independent and try to do what I can on my own but I could really use some extra help. On the days that I’m feeling well, I’m able to open and it brings so much joy being back in the kitchen doing what I love to do but I’ve missed so much work from being hospitalized, doctors appointments and just not feeling well. In the 2 years that I’ve been in this fight against cancer, I’ve been hospitalized at least 13 times and I have biweekly doctor’s appointments. The pain has been so severe that I now see a palliative care specialist to help manage my pain. I have insurance but sometimes there are still out of pocket cost for medication and additional things that I’ve needed while going through this. Some days when I’m not feeling well and have to rest and not work, physically I may be resting but my mind may not be. I’m thinking about how if I’m closed and not working, that’s money that’s not coming in for bills etc. Despite not always feeling well, I try to push forward and do the best I can.

Going through cancer is very challenging and takes a toll not just physically but mentally and financially.
