My name is Nayana Elizabeth, and I am a nineteen-year-old college student currently facing homelessness in Butte County. I come from San Leandro, a small town in the East Bay. I left my family home due to ongoing abuse and my decision not to enable my family’s substance abuse and harmful behaviors. For the past eight months, I have been without stable housing, working hard to regain stability in my life.
Unfortunately, after being accepted into my dream college, I was unable to attend the private academy for Musical Theater this fall because I lacked a co-signer for tuition, and I have had to rely solely on my own resources. I chose to move to Butte County because of the effective homeless youth resources available here, which have supported me in continuing my education. I have been couch surfing and living in my car during this difficult time. Despite these challenges, I have secured a job, enrolled at the local community college, and actively participate in their dramatic productions.
Recently, a family member fraudulently took money from my bank account and withheld my government documents and personal belongings, forcing me to pursue legal action. This theft depleted my rent money, which was my only chance at securing stable housing without a guarantor or co-signer. To make matters worse, I was involved in a vehicle collision caused by another improperly parked car, rendering my vehicle unusable. My car was not only my transportation to work and important appointments but also my place of rest.
I have been driving without insurance due to financial constraints, and now I am unable to get to work or attend critical court dates and resource centers. Despite my efforts throughout 2025 to rebuild my life independently, these recent events have left me feeling stuck. The loss of my vehicle has taken away one of my last supports.
My main goals are to continue my education and secure stable housing. I hope this reaches the people that know me, care and want to see me thrive. If you have the ability or the desire to help, I would appreciate any form of support.
