My name is Brandi Schweizer. On Tuesday, May 6th, I received a call at 6 am from my sister, Stephanie Kiser. I knew something was wrong. No one calls me that early in the morning. She was eerily calm, stating that there was an accident. Then she told me Nathan was in a car accident on his way to work and he thinks he fell asleep. Nathan has narcolepsy but has not had an event in 28 years and was just cleared a week ago by his doctor for a physical. This just couldn’t be happening. OnStar called my sister and they were able to connect him to her. She needed to hear his voice. As she was telling me this, I needed to hear that he was okay. He was taken to Forbes Hospital because it was the nearest trauma center. Thankfully, no other vehicles were involved and Nathan was able to talk. He was devastated at the loss of my sister’s new car, which he was driving while she recovered from foot surgery at home. Thankful for gap insurance that car replacement will not be an issue. Time just stopped for a moment. I followed the ambulance on Life360 because the EMTs were able to locate his phone and I watched Nathan get to the hospital safely. By this time, phone calls and text messages were being sent out. I was sick to my stomach, worried for my sister and the emotional pain she was in for her husband, in addition to worrying about his physical pain. All he kept saying was how much his back hurt. After hours in the ER on Tuesday, he was admitted and put into a room. Trauma doctors revealed an L2 fracture in his lower back as well as multiple tiny fractures around that. Consultations were had and surgery was discussed, dependent on his ability to stand, tolerate pain, and use the bathroom. Unfortunately, Nathan was not able to be successful in any of these areas and his back surgery is scheduled for Friday, May 9th at 7:30 am. He has a long road to recovery and is going to be out of work for quite some time. If you know Nathan, he thrives as a hard worker and doing hard labor. This has not been easy on him physically or emotionally. Stephanie has been by his side the entire time. Both of them are missing work and Nathan will have several medical expenses. The least amount of physical therapy is two weeks if his operation goes well. As his sister-in-law, I feel compelled to raise awareness about the best way to support Nathan at this time. The biggest concern is medical expenses and being out of work. We plan for the best with short-term disability; however, it is not always enough to cover the cost of everything. In order to help alleviate some of this stress, I decided to create this GoFundMe to shower Nathan and Stephanie with as much financial support as possible during this difficult time. All of the donations will go towards expenses related to his accident. I cannot think of two more deserving people who do anything they can to help others in need. I appreciate any help you can give at this time of need for two amazing people who mean the world to me and my family. Thank you.
