Help Support Nathan’s Journey to Walk Again
Hi, my name is Cindy Konchar, and I’m reaching out on behalf of someone incredibly dear to my heart — Nathan Carson and his loving family. Over the past several years, I’ve witnessed their strength, grace, and resilience in the face of circumstances no young person or family should ever have to endure.
In 2020, Nathan was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer. In April 2021, at just 17 years old, he underwent a life-altering hemipelvectomy — a major surgery to remove the bones of his right pelvis, hip socket and the top of the femur in his leg in order to remove the tumor. Since then, Nathan has endured nine surgeries to try and heal a persistent, non-healing wound that has caused ongoing complications and pain.
Now, 4.5 years later, Nathan is facing his 10th and 11th surgery, a major revision of his hemipelvectomy scheduled for this month. He will be non-weight-bearing for several months and will have to learn to walk all over again — for the second time in just over four years.
While Nathan has handled every hardship with unbelievable courage, this time is different. He knows the road ahead: the pain, the nerve damage, the isolation, the slow process of regaining mobility. And the emotional toll of that knowledge has been heavy. Still, even through tears and uncertainty, Nathan continues to find reasons to smile — a true testament to his extraordinary spirit.
His family, who has stood by him with unwavering love and sacrifice, is now facing another uphill battle — this time financially. We know that many of you gave generously when Nathan was first diagnosed with cancer nearly five years ago, and the family will never forget that kindness. Unfortunately, the sheer number of surgeries since then — six in just this past year — has created a huge financial strain. The costs are ongoing and staggering, including:
• Medical bills not fully covered by insurance (deductibles, co-insurance)
• Travel to and from Morgantown for surgery and follow-ups with multiple specialists
• Several months of unpaid time off for his mom to be home full-time, providing care
• Specialized medical equipment, including a custom hip brace
• Wound care supplies, most of which are not covered by insurance
• Ongoing Physical Therapy, beyond the allowed number of sessions allotted each year through insurance
• a fifth year of having to meet a high deductible and exorbitant co-insurance for every procedure, provider, and appointment that have been required since his cancer diagnosis
• Daily living expenses during a long and demanding recovery
These will be Nathan’s 6th & 7th surgeries this year alone — and it comes with the most intense recovery yet. It is a full-body, full-heart challenge for him and his family.
We’re asking — if you’re able — to help ease the financial burden so they can focus entirely on Nathan’s healing. Every donation, no matter the size, will go directly to supporting Nathan’s medical and recovery needs.
And if you can’t give financially, please consider sharing this fundraiser, and most importantly, keeping Nathan and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
Thank you for reading, for caring, and for helping us surround this remarkable young man with the support he so deeply deserves.
With gratitude,
