Our Story
My name is Sandra Story, and I am the primary caregiver of my husband, Nathan Story. In 2015, Nathan was diagnosed with a mysterious, debilitating disease that doctors still cannot identify even after three brain biopsies and extensive testing at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. It resembles multiple sclerosis, but is far more aggressive.
It has now been 10 long years since his diagnosis, and with each passing year, Nathan’s condition has worsened. Despite every treatment, every test, and every effort, there are still no answers.
Nathan’s health has declined dramatically. He is wheelchair bound, unable to walk, and requires 24/7 care. He has been in and out of the hospital countless times. Every day, he relies on high doses of steroids to stabilize flare-ups and takes multiple medications. He has been given the top medication treatments for multiple sclerosis which sadly has not worked for him.
The Challenges
This disease has taken a toll not just on Nathan’s body, but on every part of our lives. He lost his job due to his illness. To keep up with medical bills and daily care, we’ve had to make heartbreaking sacrifices:
• Sold our house
• Cashed out his 401k
• Cashed out his stock
• Emptied our savings account
• Refinanced his car
• I sold my own car
Despite all this, the costs keep rising.
My Role as His Caregiver
I am Nathan's full time caregiver. I work full time, driving 40 minutes to and from work, five days a week. After every shift, I come straight home to care for him on top of arranging private caretakers, which we can no longer afford. I am with him 5–7 days a week, making sure he is never alone. The emotional and financial burden has become overwhelming, but I will never give up on him.
Why We Need Help
Nathan needs constant, specialized care, medical supplies, and equipment just to get through daily life. The reality is, we are running out of money, and without help, I don’t know how much longer we can provide the care he desperately needs.
We are starting this GoFundMe to raise money for:
• Medical bills
• Caretakers
• Essential medical supplies and equipment
How You Can Help
Every donation, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Your generosity will give us hope and relief in the middle of this exhausting battle.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for reading our story and for any support you can give.
