Nathaniel’s Journey to Recovery: Your Help Needed

On June 21st, 15-year-old Nathaniel Deutschmann’s life changed in an instant. An active, energetic teenager who loves riding dirt bikes, four-wheelers, working on engines, fishing, hunting, and playing football—Nathaniel suffered a tragic accident when he dove into shallow water, my multiple vertebraes and severly bruising his spinal cord at c4 and c5.

Nathaniel was airlifted to New Hanover, where he underwent emergency spinal surgery to relieve pressure at c4 and c5. The following day, he had to undergo a second surgery where the doctor had to fuse c1 and c2 together due to multiple fractures. This brave young man has already shown incredible strength—he’s currently able to move his shoulders, arms, hands, and his right leg, and he continues to make improvements each day.

On July 8th, Nathaniel will be transferring to a spinal cord rehabilitation center in Atlanta, Georgia, where he will undergo intensive therapy for the next 3 to 9 months, depending on his progress. This is a critical part of his recovery, and we are hopeful that with the right care and his determination, he will continue to regain movement and independence.

Nathaniel isn’t just a friend to our family—he’s like a sixth child to us. We love him as our own, and watching him go through this has been heartbreaking, but we are standing by his side every step of the way.

During this time, his grandparents will be taking turns traveling to Atlanta to stay by his side, while one stays back home to continue working. As you can imagine, this journey is emotionally, physically, and financially overwhelming for the entire family.
