Dear Friends and Family,
I’m reaching out to share something incredibly difficult. My son, Nathaniel Moreland, our happy and energetic 22-month-old, was always full of joy and life. Recently, our world was turned upside down. We took Nate to his pediatrician because his stomach was unusually large and firm. We were told he was constipated, and he started a regimen to help. But when he began throwing up uncontrollably, I rushed him to the emergency room.
What we thought was a simple issue turned into something much more serious. After more tests and an ultrasound, doctors found a massive tumor in Nate’s stomach, pressing against his right kidney. We were immediately transferred to Norton Children’s Hospital in Louisville, where Nate underwent a biopsy. Our sweet boy has been diagnosed with Wilms Tumor, a large and aggressive mass that has pushed his organs to the side. Unfortunately, the tumor is wrapped around vital arteries, making it impossible to remove just yet. To make things even more heartbreaking, doctors have confirmed that Nate will need to have one of his kidneys removed.
Nate has already had surgery to insert a port and has begun chemotherapy. For the next six weeks, he’ll be undergoing an intense regimen of three different chemotherapy drugs—Dactinomycin, Doxorubicin, and Vincristine. Our hope is that the tumor will shrink enough for surgery to remove it, along with his affected kidney. Even then, Nate will still need further chemo and radiation to ensure that no traces of the tumor remain.
This has been an unimaginable journey for our family, and it all happened so fast—our lives changed in a single day. I’ve been by Nate’s side, day and night, unable to work. His father and I are endlessly grateful for the love and support we’ve received, and we are asking for continued prayers, positive thoughts, and any help you might be able to offer during this difficult time.
Thank you for being here with us. Your support means everything.
With love and gratitude,
