Hi, my name is Nathan Dabbs I'm a 17 year old lad from Bridge Creek, Vic Australia.
I have always had a love for anything with 2 wheels, starting on dirtbikes at 5yrs old. At 12 yrs old I was given my first MTB and whilst it was all just fun too begin with I soon realised MTB and particularly Downhill MTB is my passion, my everything - I live and breathe for this!
I began competing in state competitions at 14yrs old and have been consistently improving my skills and achievements over the past 3 years with podium finishes in numerous races.
Born and raised on Mornington Peninsula, Vic my family moved to the Victorian High Country mid 2022 so I could train on bigger and more challenging tracks preparing me for
2023 where I've set my sights on World Championships in Europe.
The Europe Worlds kick off with UCI World Cup in Fort William Scotland in August, top 6 riders get selected for this and if I race well in the next 2 races here in Australia I'm in a very good chance of being selected to ride for Australia (massive dream right there!).
I'm heading to Europe in Mid July 2023 to prepare and train ready for the upcoming world cup season, I will be racing amongst the best at Andorra, Loudenville and Les Portes Du Soleil.
Preparing for this trip is epic and it wouldn't be possible without the support from my family, sponsors, mentors and my team - you all are amazing!
To give you some idea of the costs involved, here's a snippet:
- return airfares to Europe approximately $2500
- accommodation and travel, we're trying to do this on a budget as much as possible (hiring a van to sleep and travel in as much as possible) but it's still a massive outlay and I'm still getting my head around the costs - van hire approx $4000 for the duration and accommodation, haven't booked it yet but I'd be guessing around $2000
- Downhill racing is tough on bikes, so I have to take extra parts, like spare wheels, tires, derailleur, chain, hub. These things are easily going to run more than $3000 but I've got to be prepared.
- Insurance to cover me whilst downhill MTB racing and training around $2000 (yep it's a risky sport and it costs this much to insure me doing it!)
- Food and spending money! I don't know how much it costs to eat in Europe but I'm about to find out!
If you have it in you to help me get to Europe, it would mean a lot to me. At 17, it's crazy that I have this opportunity, but it is a dream come true and I want to thank you so much for helping me make it a reality.
Cheers
