This month, my brother-in-law, Nate Althoff, was diagnosed with aggressive B-cell Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. After experiencing swelling in his leg and swollen lymph nodes, he had a CT scan and immediate biopsy which confirmed the diagnosis. Since the initial biopsy, the last month has been a whirlwind of blood tests, imaging, surgeries, procedures, doctor visits, lots of tough decisions, hospital admissions and a few setbacks. Shortly after his biopsy, Nate experienced a large blood clot in his leg that needed immediate treatment and an ICU stay. He has since had a port surgically placed, started his first round of chemotherapy, and was readmitted to the ICU for yet another procedure to treat the recurring blood clot. While this type of cancer is treatable, it can be unpredictable, and Nate, along with his family giving him lots of love and support, have a long road ahead of them.
Nate is a graduate of Delano High School in Delano, MN. He went on to play basketball at the University of Utah and currently works as a web developer in Fargo, ND. Most importantly, Nate is a loving husband to my sister, Katie, and a dedicated father to their 4 young children. We also know him as a Boy Scout leader, coach, and a wonderful friend/son/brother/teammate/co-worker to so many.
While Nate has been going through the process of diagnosis and treatment for lymphoma, he has been forced to cut back on work. Katie has been working overtime to make sure that her healthcare system's most important patient is well taken care of, while balancing work and the busy schedules of 4 kids.
Money from this fund will help to cover the additional expenses that the Althoff's will incur while Nate is undergoing treatment and recuperating. This may include co-pays, uncovered medical expenses, increased cost of gas and travel to medical appointments, additional childcare, meals, and any other services that might make life a little easier over the next 6 months. It will hopefully alleviate some of the financial strain and allow the family to focus on what is most important- Nate's recovery.
Nate and Katie would never ask for this help for themselves - I know living so far away, I have been looking for a way to help their family make it through this challenging time. Any amount that you can donate would be greatly appreciated!!!
