Help Nantume Achieve Her Dream of Studying at University in Canada
Nantume Masturah is an extraordinary young woman whose journey from a small village in Uganda to pursue higher education in Canada is inspiring. This fall, she will begin her studies at Huron University after graduating from Ridley College in June with both the IB Diploma and the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. The generous scholarship from Huron University will help make her dream a reality; she needs support to cover extended living expenses and to meet the student visa requirements.
A Story of Resilience and Achievement
Nantume’s success story is a testament to her resilience, determination, and commitment to making a difference. Growing up in poverty in Uganda, she overcame significant obstacles to pursue her education. Thanks to a bursary from Ridley College and the school community's generous support, Nantume could attend boarding school in St. Catharines, Ontario. A GoFundMe campaign was supported for additional expenses thanks to donors worldwide.
At Ridley College, Nantume thrives as a student leader and advocate:
• She serves as a prefect in Grade 12 and is actively involved in the Ridley Cadet Corps, Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA), and Debate Club.
• In 2024, she won the prestigious Jay Feagan Philip Davies Memorial Award for Leadership and Character Development.
• She continues her advocacy against period poverty by successfully initiating the Menstrual Equity Initiative in her school and collaborating with the extended community.
• She received the Terar Dum Prosim Award for Service and represented Ridley on a service trip to Malawi, where she spoke on national television about youth empowerment.
• She participated in sports like softball, where she won the Rookie of the Year award, and Basketball, where she was awarded the best defender.
A Global Advocate for Change
Nantume’s passion for social justice extends beyond Canada. While studying online at Xian Liangjiatin International School in China (on scholarship), she founded an NGO to combat period poverty among young girls in Uganda as part of her IB MYP Personal Project. Her efforts earned her the internationally recognized Dr. Siva Kumari MYP Student Innovator’s Grant for her charity. In 2023. She was invited to give a keynote at the Changemakers Conference in Germany, at Frankfurt International School, further amplifying her voice as an advocate for women’s rights.
The Challenge Ahead
Although Nantume has secured a generous scholarship from Huron University, her family in Uganda cannot afford the additional costs of daily living expenses. Her father struggles to support her five brothers, who are still in school. Without financial assistance, Nantume will not be able to take advantage of this life-changing opportunity.
