Nanette is a spunky, wise, and passionate wife, mother of two, teacher, farm girl, beekeeper, friend, and so much more. This spring she received the unexpected news that she has an aggressive form of stage four lung cancer.
She drove herself to urgent care in May after suffering several months of what she and her doctors believed were post-COVID complications. Medical staff at the urgent care center immediately sent her to the emergency room. Here she was informed that her coughing and weakness were not because of COVID, but instead came from a mass in her lung that had already metastasized to her liver and vertebre. We have since learned that it's in her brain as well.
The news has left her family with so many questions, not least of which is, "How does a seemingly healthy 51-year-old woman who has never smoked a day in her life get lung cancer?" Her doctor said, "There are two kinds of people who get lung cancer. Those who smoke and those who just aren't lucky."
Doctors are hopeful! Science has made leaps and bounds in understanding lung cancer within the last few years. But, Nanette and her family still have a long and uncertain road ahead.
Both Nanette and her husband, David, are self-employed. While they do have insurance, it only covers major medical expenses that involve hospitalization. This means that they must find a way to pay for doctors' appointments, diagnostic tests and imaging, as well as prescriptions. Additionally, throughout her treatment, Nanette will be unable to work, which means they'll need a way to make up for lost income.
We want you to know just how thankful we are for each gift, big or small. They truly do make a difference.
Many of you have already reached out to ask how you can support our family during this time. Here is a list of additional ways to support Nanette:
- Message Bible promises to her
- Send funnies to help her laugh
- Bring plant-based dishes for easy meals or fresh fruits and veggies for snacking and juicing (organic if possible)
- Provide help in the garden - this is her thoughtful spot that brings her joy, peace, and health-supporting food
We are incredibly thankful for each and every one of you in Nanette's Village. Whether your support comes financially or in some other way, you are a blessing.
